2012 Grants

Elementary School Edible Gardens, $13,000
The Darien Foundation provided funding for the professional installation of fencing around the edible gardens that were established at all five elementary schools. Students use the gardens in their science curriculum while learning about the importance and joy of growing one’s own food.

 

Andrew Shaw Memorial Scout Cabin, $19,000
Audio visual equipment (video projector, sound system, whiteboard, flatscreen television, microphones, speakers, etc.), computers and an AED Defibrillator were installed at the Scout Cabin which is now well equipped to fulfill its mission of being a leadership training center for all scout troops.

 

Darien Police Department, $50,000
The PRISM training system for the Darien Police Department is an excellent example of a public-private partnership. The Foundation pledged $50,000 towards this highly realistic video-based firearms training system and challenged the Police Department to come up with the remaining $30,000. The Darien Police Department will soon have one of the most sophisticated simulated training systems in the region.

 

Darien High School, $30,000
The Blue Wave Booster Club undertook at $150,000 fundraising effort for a new state-of-the-art fitness center at Darien High School. The Foundation provided a $30,000 challenge grant which enabled the Booster Club to complete its fundraising efforts on schedule.

 

Darien Arts Center, $90,000
Brand new, state-of-the-art sound and video equipment will enhance the DAC’s Weatherstone Studio Performing Arts Center and enrich the experience of everyone who attends or participates in the Art Center’s programs.

 

Weed Beach, $3,000
A 40′ flagpole and yardarm provided by the Foundation completed the Weed Beach renovation project.

 

Library Computer Classes, $6,000
Computer classes for school and community volunteers are offered at the Darien Library each spring and fall. The Foundation pays for the instructor for these highly popular and ever changing classes.
